Lawrence High School Student Selected to Represent Panama in the 2024 Summer Olympics

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (APRIL 2023)—The scholars of Lawrence High School have always shown their excellence both in and outside the classroom. Recently,  11th-grade student, Angel Flores Ruiz, was selected to represent the country of Panama in the 2024 Summer Olympics boxing competition. Angel has been a role model for other students, excelling academically and volunteering with special needs students.  He is the future of outstanding individuals.

“My love for boxing started at a very young age, I was only 10 years old and I remember seeing my father training which I used to love watching.  I knew I wanted to do the same,” said Angel. “Social media has been an important tool for me and it was through Instagram that the president of the Panama Olympic team discovered me. He followed my journey for three years before contacting me. I’m looking forward to showing everything that I have learned in these past years. For me, if you follow these simple rules of life: always putting God first, listening to your parents, and believing in yourself, you will be successful in achieving your dreams.”

Angel is scheduled to travel to Columbia in August for his first representation as a Panamanian Olympic boxer in the 51 kg weight class. As his mother is from Panama, he was scouted and selected to represent Panama in both national and international competitions. As a result of his success in competitions, Angel was offered the opportunity to get his Panamanian citizenship, which will allow him to compete in  upcoming tournaments representing Panama.
