LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (MARCH 2026)—Students from Lawrence High School’s Hebrew Culture Club and African American Club, accompanied by faculty advisors Ms. Janet Ganes, Ms. Janora Blackman, and Ms. Donna Visconti, recently attended the YOUnity Conference, a multicultural program sponsored by the Suffolk YJCC. The conference brought together students from twelve high schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties for a day dedicated to fostering unity, understanding, and meaningful dialogue.
A highlight of the program was a powerful theatrical performance titled Letters from Anne and Martin, presented by two actors. The production explored the striking parallels between the experiences of Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., offering students a compelling look at the enduring struggles against hatred, discrimination, and injustice. Following the performance, students engaged in a thoughtful discussion addressing contemporary societal challenges and the importance of speaking out against prejudice. Lawrence students actively contributed to this dialogue, sharing their perspectives and personal insights.
The conference continued with breakout sessions led by facilitators, where students were encouraged to voice their opinions on a variety of topics related to diversity and inclusion. Participants were challenged to take clear positions, agreeing or disagreeing with statements about issues affecting their education, fostering critical thinking and respectful debate. The day concluded with an inspiring presentation by guest speaker Tracy Edwards, who introduced students to the work of the NAACP and emphasized the importance of advocacy. Students learned practical ways to become involved in promoting equity and equality within their communities.
Lawrence High School is proud of its students for their engagement, leadership, and commitment to building a more inclusive and understanding society.
