What is on the Ballot?
PROPOSITION NO. 1: SCHOOL BUDGET
RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Lawrence Union Free School District No. 15, Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, be authorized to expend TBD sum of for the fiscal year 2020-2021, and is further authorized to levy the necessary tax for the above purpose upon the taxable property of the School District, after first deducting the monies available from State aid and other sources.
PROPOSITION NO. 2 : LIBRARY BUDGET
RESOLVED, that TBD sum be appropriated for the Peninsula Public Library for the fiscal year 2020-2021 and that said amount be raised by tax upon the taxable property of the Lawrence Union Free School District No. 15, Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, pursuant to § 259 of the Education Law, and be levied and collected in the same manner as are other general taxes, after first deducting the monies available from State aid and other sources.
SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES: To elect two (2) trustees of the Board of Education for a three (3) year term commencing July 1, 2020, and ending on June 30, 2023.
LIBRARY BOARD TRUSTEE: To elect one (1) trustee of the Peninsula Public Library for a five (5) year term commencing July 1, 2020, and ending on June 30, 2025.
All voters must be United States citizens, 18 years old or older, and a resident of School District 15 for at least thirty days prior to the vote. In addition, a resident must be registered either with the school district or with the Nassau County Board of Elections. If you have voted in either a school district election within the past year or a local general election anytime in the past four years, you are already registered. If you are not already registered with either, you may register with the County by mail or in person.
You may register in person throughout the school year with Ms. Mohinder Bharaj, District Clerk. By doing so, you will only be qualified to vote in school district elections. Qualified residents should bring at least one document from each category below, to the District Clerk’s office, 2 Reilly Road, Cedarhurst, NY 11516 on school days between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. May 6, 2020 is the last day to register with the District Clerk for the May 19, 2020 budget vote and election.

An absentee ballot can be used by anyone who is unable to appear in person on the day of the school district election.
Who is eligible to cast an absentee ballot rather than have to vote in person?
An absentee ballot can be used by any registered voter who is unable to appear in person on the day of the school district election for any of the following reasons:
An individual is a patient in a hospital, or is unable to appear personally at the polling place due to illness or physical disability
An individual is required to be outside of the county on the day of the vote because of special duties, occupation, business or studies
An individual is on vacation elsewhere on such day
An individual is detained in jail awaiting action by a grand jury, awaiting trial, or confined to a prison
What other requirements must be met and procedures followed before an individual can cast an absentee ballot?
An individual must be a registered voter in the district
An individual must be 18 years of age
An individual must reside in the district for thirty days before the election
An individual who wants to cast an absentee ballot must complete, sign and return the absentee ballot application to the District Clerk, Lawrence Union Free School District, P.O. Box 477, Lawrence, NY 11559 by May 12, 2020 if the ballot is to be mailed to the individual.
If an absentee ballot application is received after May 12, 2020, the applicant must go to the District Clerk’s office located at Lawrence High School, 2 Reilly Road, Cedarhurst by May 18, 2020 in order to vote in person. Valid NYS Photo ID is required.
Absentee ballots can only be delivered to the individual who applied for the absentee ballot.
Any individual, who would like to fill out the absentee ballot application and receive and cast the absentee ballot at the same time, should do so at the Office of the District Clerk by May 18, 2020. Valid NYS Photo ID is required.
Residents that are registered with the Nassau County Board of Elections as “Permanently Disabled” and have been an active voter within the last 4 years will be sent their ballots automatically and need not apply.
Applications may not be transmitted electronically because an original signature is required.
Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed, pursuant to the provisions of the Education Law, to establish your entitlement to vote by Absentee Ballot. A Ballot will then be issued to you.
You will not be eligible to vote by Absentee Ballot if:
Your application is incomplete, unsigned or undated
You are not a qualified registered voter of the Lawrence School District
Returning your Absentee Ballot
The ballot will come with instructions and a set of return envelopes. After making your choices on the ballot, you must enclose it in the smaller envelope that contains your name and address, sign and date the back. Insert that envelope in the bigger envelope addressed to the District Clerk, place proper postage on it and mail it back.
Alternatively, the ballot may be hand-delivered to the District Clerk's office by 5:00 pm on May 19, 2020. Your completed ballot cannot be delivered directly to your polling place on the day of the election.
