WHEN CAN MY CHILD GO TO KINDERGARTEN?

Children who reach their fifth birthday before December 1st may enter kindergarten in that year. Children whose birthdays fall after December 1st enter kindergarten the following year.

HOW DO I REGISTER MY CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN?

Kindergarten packets are available at the Number Four School or Lawrence Public School Transportation Department. They should be picked up starting the last week of January. Completed packets are returned during kindergarten registration.

WHAT DO I BRING TO REGISTRATION?

Completed registration packet

Proof of birth – original birth certificate

Two (2) proofs of District 15 residency (in addition to deed, property tax bill, lease or affidavits)

Proof of parent relationship

Proof of up-to-date immunizations

Proof of current physical examination

Records must be presented, approved and photocopied before your child may be registered.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS FOR THE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM?

Lawrence Public Schools provides a full-day kindergarten program. Children attend school from 9:20 AM – 3:30 PM.

WHEN CAN MY CHILD GO TO PRE-KINDERGARTEN?

Children who will be four years old on or before December 1st will be eligible for entrance into the Pre-Kindergarten program in accordance with required guidelines developed by the State Education Department of School District regulations as established by the Superintendent of Schools.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR PRE-KINDREGARTEN?

Applications for pre-kindergarten can be picked up at the Number Four School in

mid-January. Applications are reviewed by a screening committee which selects the children to be included in the program.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS FOR THE PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM?

Lawrence Public Schools provides a full-day Pre-Kindergarten program. Children attend school from 9:20 AM – 3:30 PM.

IS EXTENDED DAY CARE AVAILABLE?

Yes. The Extended Day Program provides before and after school sessions that operate on regularly scheduled school days, for both pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. Fees are set by the Five Towns Community Center, they can be reached at (516) 239-6244 Ext. 241.

IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED FOR PRE-KINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN?

Bus transportation is provided for all children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Current district transportation policy is based on the distance from home to school. Your child will be assigned a bus route at the beginning of the school year. Any changes to your child’s daily schedule must be reported to your child’s school and the Lawrence Public School transportation department.

HOW LARGE ARE THE CLASSES?

Each pre-kindergarten class has 18 students and kindergarten from 18 to 20 students with a teacher and a teacher’s assistant.

HOW DO I LEARN ABOUT MY CHILD’S PROGRESS?

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers hold parent conferences in November and March. A kindergarten progress report is issued in January and June. You may request a conference with your child’s teacher at any time.

WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING?

Screening is the first step in finding your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Screening is a brief test of a child’s development.

Screening alerts us to a possible difficulty in learning new skills.
