Book of the Month

Dear Number Five School Family:
I hope that you have had a most enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving. As we look towards the month of December, there are several events that are worth mentioning so that you can mark them in your calendar.
The weather has turned colder and the trees have lost all of their autumnal leaves. However, you should continue to be warmed by the knowledge your children continue to acquire within the walls of our home away from home; Number Five School.
During the month of December, our staff will have the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the myriad successes that your children have accomplished over the past three months of school. The teachers have been busy completing your children’s most informative report cards and look forward to sharing quality time discussing the academic and social growth that they have made. Please be sure to confirm your appointment for Parent Teacher conferences scheduled for Thursday, December 4, 2008. Your participation is paramount to your child’s overall success
Did you ever wonder how many inventions were the results of an accident? Believe it or not, there is a story behind every food and snack item that has been invented. Sometimes the story is tastier than the food itself. Our book of the month for December is George Crum and the Saratoga Chip written by Gaylia Taylor. This is the true story of George Crum who invented one of America’s favorite snack food; potato chips! Please have your child share the remarkable story of this famous invention and together, or perhaps research other inventions that were discovered by accident. We look forward to the information you find and will display your findings on our bulletin board outside the main office.
We will be sponsoring our annual Swap a Book on Thursday and Friday, December 11th and 12th. In order to make this swap a success, please have your child bring in a book that he/she has read and would like to “swap” for another one brought in by other students. All children will have an opportunity to “swap” during a scheduled time in the Science Lab.
Our Annual Gazebo Concert at Cedarhurst Park is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th at 10:00 am. We hope you will be able to join your children and share holiday songs with our community. This is one of the highlights of our school year. Permission slips will be forthcoming.

Estimada Familia de la Escuela Número Cinco:
Espero que hayan disfrutado de un hermoso “Thanksgiving” ó Dia de Acción de Gracias. Al comenzar Diciembre, tenemos varios eventos que merecen mencionarse y así pueden ustedes marcarlos en su calendario.
El tiempo está mas frio y los árboles perdieron sus hojas de otoño. Sin embargo ustedes pueden sentirse reconfortados con lo que sus niños tienen y adelantan dentro de las paredes de nuestra escuela que sirve como un casa fuera de su casa: La Escuela Número 5.
Durante el mes de Diciembre, nuestro personal tendrá la oportunidad de reunirse con ustedes y discutir todos los sucesos que sus niños han ganado los pasados tres meses de escuela. Los maestros estuvieron ocupados completando los boletines (report cards) más informativos de los alumnos y esperan compartir buen tiempo con ustedes para discutir los adelantos académicos y sociales que hayan tenido. Asegúrese de confirmar su cita para la Conferencia de Padres y Maestros el dia Jueves, 4 de Diciembre 2008. Su participación es muy importante para el éxito de su niño/a.
Se ha preguntado alguna vez cuántos inventos fueron el resultado de un accidente? Créalo ó no, hay una historia detrás de cada comida y alimento que se ha inventado. A veces la historia es más sabrosa que la misma comida. Nuestro libro del mes para Diciembre es George Crum and the Saratoga Chip escrito por Gaylia Taylor. Esta es la verdadera historia de George Crum que inventó uno de los “snacks” favoritos de America: Las papitas fritas! Por favor comparta con su niño/a esta notable historia de famosa invención y juntos también busquen otros inventos discubiertos por accidente. Esperamos ver qué informaciones encuentran y las pondremos en exibición en la pizarra afuera de la oficina principal.
Vamos a mantener el annual Intercambio del Libro el Jueves y Viernes, 11 y 12 de Diciembre. Para que este intercambio sea un éxito, trate de que su niño/a traiga un libro que haya leido y quiera cambiarlo por otro traído por otro alumno. Todos los niños tendrán la oportunidad de hacer cambios durante un horario especial en el laboratorio de ciencias.
Nuestro Concierto anual de Gazebo en el Parque de Cedarhurst está anunciado para el Miércoles, 17 de Diciembre a las 10:00 am. Esperamos que puedan asistir y compartir con sus niños y nuestra comunidad las canciones de las fiestas. Este es uno de nuestros principales eventos del año escolar. Boletos de permiso para asistir, vendrán pronto.
