he American Civil War Homepage began as a
class project for Information Science 560 at the University of Tennessee's
School of Information Sciences during the Fall 1994 semester. When the page
was first launched in February 1995 it contained slightly more than thirty
(30) links to resources about the American Civil War. It has grown. The page
has received numerous awards, honors, and favorable comment since its first
appearance. Most recently it was included in the American Library
Association's "Top 700 Web sites for Children."

slaves from across the American South were interviewed by writers and
journalists under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration. These
former slaves, most born in the last years of the slave regime or during the
Civil War, provided first-hand accounts of their experiences on plantations,

A secret terrorist organization, the Ku Klux
Klan led underground resistance against the civil rights and political power
of newly freed slaves during the Reconstruction period after the American
Civil War. The Klan's goal was to reestablish the dominance of the prewar
plantation aristocracy. It was revived in an altered form in the 20th
century.
