Internet Safety Policy for Lawrence Public Schools
(adopted February 28, 2002)
The Lawrence Public Schools recognize the importance of the use of computer technology as an integral part of the education process for students and staff to access appropriate instructional resources. At the same time, it is the policy of the Lawrence Public Schools to protect students from inappropriate material on the Internet and the World Wide Web, as well to ensure the safety and security of students when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications (e.g., instant message services). This is done both through proper adult supervision of all students using the Internet and the World Wide Web and by electronic means such as content filtering, which will restrict minors’ access to materials deemed "harmful to minors.”
It is also the policy of the Lawrence Public Schools to prohibit the use of the network, Internet and World Wide Web for any unauthorized or illegal purpose, including accessing other computer systems worldwide with the intent of disrupting their service. Additionally, no student or staff member may disclose, use or disseminate personal identification information regarding Lawrence Public School students.
In consideration of the Lawrence Public Schools' willingness to provide access to networks on the Internet and in order to ensure continued access, I,______________________ as parent/guardian of _______________, and I,____________________, as student (hereinafter "Student") agree as follows:
1. The Student is responsible for the proper and ethical use of network access through the computers by following the written procedures set up by the Lawrence Public Schools, as well as the oral instructions given by the staff. Any actions by the Student that might harm any computer equipment or software or impair the effective use thereof are to be avoided.
2. Prior to the Student's use of the computer and access to the Internet, the student will be required to attend a presentation on the aspects of security and ethics involved in use of the network.
3. The Student is prohibited from allowing anyone else to use his or her account name and/or password. Violation of this rule by the Student will result in the Student immediately losing his or her right to network access.
4. There are multiple computers available for the student access. The Student is responsible for NOT pursuing material that could be considered inappropriate or offensive. Accessing or downloading of inappropriate material will not be tolerated by the Lawrence Public Schools and will result in the Student's loss of the privilege of using the network, and may result in academic penalty and/or disciplinary action.
5. To abide by all rules and regulations hereafter promulgated.
I acknowledge that I have read the above, and agree to abide by the aforesaid rules and to be responsible for my access to networks on the Internet and my use of the computer equipment.
