Business and Marketing Education


Aims of the Program
- To identify and encourage students with particular aptitudes and skills in business and marketing education.
- To develop saleable skills for part-time and/or full-time employment.
- To provide guidance and direction to all students in business and marketing education.
- To acquaint the students with the competitive business world through practice and/or work experience. 
- To provide students with the background and foundation in business/marketing for further course work in post secondary school studies.


Who Should Take Business Courses?
- All students who seek greater knowledge and skills in business.
- Those who want a "taste" of the business world.
- Students who enjoy and appreciate a practical education that will be useful to them in the future.
- Everyone will be involved in business at some point in life. The earlier the exposure to dealing with it the better prepared  our students will be.

Course Descriptions

Keyboarding
Learn the keyboard for personal and college use.  Students will learn touch keyboarding and use a word processing package.  Students will learn basic letter and report preparation skills including various business and formal letters as well as term papers. 

Basic Keyboarding / Word Processing
This course provides hands on instruction in basic features  of Microsoft Word, The most widely used word processing program.  Our emphasis will be on learning how to type correctly.  In addition, students will learn the concepts of word processing, as they develop their skills.

Word Processing
This course provides hands on instruction using the basic features of Word for Windows.  Word is the most popular word-processing program used in business today.  The students will learn to edit their work, move, block and copy the text that they write.

Business Analysis (Retailing)
This is an excellent orientation course for marketing and is a basic foundation course for those interested in retailing, merchandising, advertising, and business management.  Career in these fields will be explored as well as business organizations.

Personal Business Management (Financial Decision Making)
Forms of business and personal organizations, banking, investments, insurance, taxation and employer-employee relationships are covered in this course.  Students will learn to relate the business world to their lives for actual use.  Personal Financial decision making will be explored including managing one's money wisely.  Personal management skills will be developed.  Newsday Stock market Game is an integral part of this course, including a visit to the New York Stock Exchange. 

Business Psychology
The focus is on human relations, behavior, motivation, and personality in commercial enterprise.  Business concepts, such as advertising, public relations, market research, and personnel management are approached from the psychological standpoint.

Career and Financial Management
Emphasis of this course will be on the Working Citizen and Personal Resource Management modules.  This is an introductory course for Occupational and Business Education.  It is a required course for those students wishing to take a sequence in Occupational Education.  Membership in DECA is encouraged in order to further the full business experience. 

Work Experience
300 hours of work for each semester.  Students must be registered with the work coordinator, and attend meetings periodically as scheduled involving discussions and presentations dealing with employer/employee relationships.

Entrepreneurship
This course provides an opportunity for students to analyze themselves in relation to an entrepreneurial career, develop a business plan and conduct an in-school business.  As students learn business principles, the entrepreneurship project will be developed.  Students will consider the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment, assess personal aptitudes for owning  and operating  their own business compared to other types of business ownership.  The students will develop and market their own product for school-wide sale and production.   

Accounting
Students interested in accounting and/or business administration will want to take this course.  Simulations will be used to give students opportunities to apply their learning.  Students will read write, analyze business documents, manage checking accounts and petty cash funds, record basic business transactions, and update and maintain basic business records.  Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to take College-Level Accounting course, provided they meet the criteria for the College-Level Accounting course.  

College Accounting
College Credit from C.W. Post.  $85.00 per credit (up to a total of six credits), $30.00 registration fee.  Lawrence High School offers this accelerated course in accounting which is equivalent to many college level courses.  There are many reasons to take an accounting course.  The student desires to learn a skill leading to a high paying and rewarding career.  The student has an interest in a business related field such as marketing, management, business administration or finance.  The student has a future goal of owning his/her own business.  The student has an interest in learning personal financial skills.  A solid math background and a serious approach for learning are important.  Selected students are eligible to take the course for college credit.

Computer Applications
This is the computer age.  Learn how spreadsheets, databases, graphics, and world processing can be used for both business and personal applications.  This course provides hands-on instructions on computers, using the latest Microsoft software available.  Computers will be used on a daily basis.  The course is essential for all college bound and business students.

Web Design
The course will use FrontPage by Microsoft, a popular website  creation management tool.  Front page will allow students to create, edit, design, manage and maintain Web sites and related Web based multimedia content.  HTML scripting and technology history will also be explored while creating Web Pages.

Entertainment Marketing
This course is designed for students with career interests in the fields of sports and/or entertainment.  In addition to a marketing overview, this course will provide students with competencies in the areas of sponsorship, promotion, advertising, sales, event planning, and communications.  Students will learn about the marketing "tie-ins" of products including: clothing, equipment, automobiles, foods, movies, television programming, toys, and games.  Students will also understand the career options available to them.  This course will be enriched by field trips and guest speakers.  Basic knowledge of computers will be beneficial for reports, projects and and presentation.
