The aim of the Mathematics Department at Lawrence High School is to ensure that students:
- have mathematical knowledge.
- have an understanding of mathematical concepts.
- be able to apply mathematics in the solution of problems.
We instill in students the understanding that they will only become successful in mathematics if they see it as a whole, not as isolated skills and facts. Our goal is to produce students who will understand the concepts of and become proficient with the skills of mathematics; will communicate and reason mathematically; and will become problem solvers by using appropriate tools and strategies. The many varied course offerings in the Mathematics Department are designed to provide mathematics training for a student body having a wide range of mathematical backgrounds and abilities. Three years of mathematics are required for a high school diploma. However, students are urged to pursue mathematics programs commensurate with future plans and abilities.
Coursework is now structured to reflect the new Mathematics sequence recently adopted by the NY State Education Department. We offer, at both the Regents and Honors levels, courses in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 & Trigonometry. Each of these courses culminates in the Regents exam. Many students then continue with a course in Pre-Calculus. Following that, our Advanced Placement offerings include AP Calculus AB or BC, and AP Statistics. Also for college credit, we offer Calculus through the Syracuse SUPA program. Additional electives are offered in such areas as Consumer Mathematics, Statistics, and SAT Math Prep.
RECOMMENDATION AND SELECTION PROCESS FOR MATH HONORS AND AP COURSES
1. Any student who is currently enrolled in an Honors course, and meets the requirements to continue his/her study in the Honors program will be invited to enroll in the following Honors course, AP Calculus, AP Statistics or Syracuse Calculus, respectively.
2. In order for a student to be invited from a non-Honors course to the Honors level, the student must meet the department criteria, an average of 90 or above in the current Regents level class.
3. Teachers will then make the appropriate recommendation to the Guidance Department as to who should be invited to enroll in the Honors or AP courses.
